SharePoint Publish adds Site campaigns for corporate communications

Microsoft is evolving SharePoint into a more complete hub for corporate communications. With the new Publish experience and Site campaigns, organizations can manage content creation, multi-channel distribution, and analytics from the same place where SharePoint news already lives.

For IT admins and communications teams, this matters because it reduces tool sprawl while extending familiar SharePoint governance, permissions, and content management into campaign workflows.

What’s new in SharePoint Publish

Microsoft introduced Site campaigns in SharePoint, built directly into SharePoint sites and accessible from the Publish experience or site settings.

Key additions include:

  • Centralized campaign management for related SharePoint news posts
  • Multi-channel publishing to SharePoint, Outlook, Teams, and Viva Engage
  • Aggregated analytics across supported channels in one view
  • Native SharePoint integration for governance, permissions, co-authoring, and content management
  • AI-powered publishing workflows within the modern SharePoint Publish interface

Site campaigns are available to all SharePoint and Viva Amplify users.

How Site campaigns differ from the Viva Amplify app

Microsoft says the Viva Amplify app is not being replaced. Instead, SharePoint Publish is becoming the preferred experience for more communication workflows over time.

Important differences include:

  • Site campaigns live inside a SharePoint site, while Viva Amplify app campaigns use dedicated campaign sites
  • Channel-specific content customization is supported in the Amplify app, but not in Site campaigns
  • Approvals and permissions in Site campaigns follow SharePoint site controls, with Power Automate available for custom workflows
  • Campaign Brief functionality remains part of the Amplify app, not SharePoint Site campaigns

Microsoft also notes that Amplify app campaigns and SharePoint Site campaigns are not interchangeable.

Coming soon: Cross-posting to Viva Engage

A notable upcoming feature is cross-posting SharePoint news to Viva Engage. This will let authors publish a SharePoint news post to a single Engage destination while keeping comments, reactions, and replies synchronized as one conversation across SharePoint and Engage surfaces.

This should simplify employee communications by linking the full SharePoint news experience with the discussion layer in Viva Engage.

Impact for IT admins and communications teams

For administrators, the main benefit is that campaign activity can stay within SharePoint’s existing security and governance model. That may make adoption easier for organizations already standardizing on SharePoint for internal news.

For communicators, the benefit is a more unified workflow for publishing and measurement without switching between separate tools.

Next steps

  • Review the Publish experience in SharePoint
  • Evaluate whether Site campaigns fit your internal communications model
  • Compare Site campaigns with the Viva Amplify app for advanced needs like channel-specific customization
  • Prepare communications teams for upcoming Viva Engage cross-posting capabilities

Microsoft’s direction is clear: SharePoint is becoming the central hub for future corporate communications investments, while Viva Amplify continues to support existing and more advanced campaign scenarios.
